When Erin first encountered Girls on the Run, she was simply a runner passing a group of young girls on the Purple People Bridge in Greater Cincinnati. Week after week, she saw their joy and determination. Curiosity led her to ask what they were up to, and that’s when she discovered GOTR. That moment sparked a relationship that has lasted just over a decade.
This year, Erin is celebrating 10 years as a SoleMate! This remarkable milestone reflects her unwavering dedication to empowering girls through GOTR’s mission. For Erin, SoleMates provide an avenue to give back in a way she didn’t have as a child. “GOTR was not around when I was a young girl,” she reflects. “I played sports for fun, and that was great, but the curriculum that goes along with the physical aspect of this program is almost more important. Girls need those lessons so they can grow into better versions of themselves.”
To date, she has raised an incredible $10,327, providing scholarships to 59 girls!
Running With Purpose
As a SoleMate, Erin pairs her training and fundraising with a cause that continually motivates her. On tough training days (read: inescapable summer heat and humidity in the Midwest), she reminds herself of the girls who are learning that they, too, can do hard things. That connection to the mission keeps her moving, even when it’s not easy.
The Sports Bra Run Legacy
In addition to her decade as a SoleMate, Erin has also built a signature fundraiser that has become a community favorite: the Sports Bra Run. Inspired by a similar event she once attended, Erin launched her own version in 2021 after the pandemic pause. This year marked the 5th anniversary of her event, which combines fitness, fun and body positivity in one empowering experience. The run has become both a tradition and a creative way to bring visibility and support to GOTR Greater Cincinnati.
Meaningful Memories
Through her SoleMate journey, Erin has made lasting connections. One of her most meaningful memories came when she was partnered with a Westwood Elementary GOTR Team, which happens to have high scholarship needs. The thoughtful welcome she received from the coaches and girls left an indelible mark. “They had made me a small gift, and it was the most welcome I’d ever felt as a SoleMate!” she recalls.
More Than Fundraising
What began as a way to support a good cause has given Erin far more in return. Over the years, she’s gained friendships, purpose and a deeper connection to her community. Most importantly, she has seen firsthand how GOTR helps the next generation of girls learn that they can overcome challenges and thrive.
Erin encourages anyone who’s ever thought about getting involved with GOTR to consider joining as a SoleMate. “It’s rewarding and not as difficult as you might think,” she says.
A decade in, Erin’s journey is a testament to what happens when passion meets purpose. With every mile done and dusted, she’s fueling the confidence and joy of girls across Greater Cincinnati, and showing them that they, too, can do hard things.
We are grateful for Erin's steadfast support and dedication and wish her the very best in her upcoming marathon!
